Less than 48 hours after it was launched, Apple has revealed the pricing of the new iPhone 4S models, should you want to go down the sim-free route. The latest iPhone goes on sale on 14 October, with an option to go grab one at an Apple store (including online) or to go see your favoured network to get one. On past evidence, all the networks will be selling it eventually. If you get one from Apple, it will mean paying the money upfront, a lot of money too, but if you get the right sim, you could end up paying less than with a contract deal.
The price is £499 for a 16GB model without a contract and with a choice of black or white for the exterior. If you want the 32GB model, £599 is the price with the same colour choice, while the big boy of the bunch, the 64GB model, will sell for £699.
On the flipside, if you can live without the latest upgrades, you can bag yourself a deal on an older model. £429 is the starting price of the iPhone 4, while the older iPhone 3G starts at £319 sim-free. Those prices may drop a little more when the iPhone 4S actually lands on the shelves, so you might want to sit tight for another week or so, just in case.
As for contract prices, we really don't know yet. Vodafone, Orange, O2, Three and T-Mobile have all opened pre-registration pages, but none are giving anything away about the price. Expect those details to trickle in ahead of that launch date next Friday and don't expect any bargains. The iPhone is still the hottest smartphone in town.
